What every song split agreement should include

  • Song and session details — title, artist, date and place of the session, so the document can be matched to the right recording later.
  • Each writer's legal name — stage names alone are not enough for PRO registration.
  • PRO and IPI number — ASCAP, BMI, SESAC or another society, plus the writer's IPI so royalties route correctly.
  • Publishing share percentages — the composition split, always totalling 100%.
  • An agreement clause — short, plain-language confirmation that everyone accepts the split.
  • Signatures with timestamps — signed the same day, ideally, while everyone is still in the room.
